 n\,\n\n\n\nApolline Chappard\n\n****************** English version *******
***********\nHello everyone\,\n\nI am pleased to invite you to my PhD defe
nce\, which will take place on May 22nd at 10:00 AM in room 123 of the IAS
.\n\nMy thesis\, entitled "Systematic Effects in CMB Experiments: High-Acc
uracy Antenna Beam Characterisation and Atmospheric Emission Measurements
at Teide Observatory with QUIJOTE\," was supervised by Bruno Maffei of the
Cosmology team at IAS\, by José Alberto Rubiño Martín and Ricardo Tana
usú Génova Santos of the CMB team at IAC in Tenerife\, Spain.\n\nThe the
sis will be presented in English to a jury composed of Mathieu Langer\, El
ia Battistelli\, Martin Giard\, and Alessia Ritacco.\n\nAbstract:\nThe cos
mic microwave background (CMB) offers a unique window into the early Unive
rse\, approximately 380\,000 years after the Big Bang\, and remains one of
the most powerful instruments in modern cosmology. Measurements of the CM
B's temperature and polarization anisotropies have allowed for the tight c
onstraint of cosmological parameters and the establishment of the ΛCDM mo
del as the standard cosmological model. Current research on the CMB focuse
s on detecting primordial B-mode polarization\, which would provide direct
evidence of inflation\, and on measuring CMB spectral distortions\, which
allow the study of the thermal history of the early Universe. Achieving t
hese goals requires unprecedented experimental sensitivity and precise con
trol of the systematic effects affecting CMB experiments. This thesis focu
ses on characterizing the systematic effects of CMB experiments\, particul
arly instrumental systematic errors and atmospheric contamination. First\,
the optical characterization of a 402 GHz antenna designed by CNES is pre
sented in the context of the LiteBIRD space mission. Using a compact anten
na test complex installed in the anechoic chamber of the IAS (Institut d'A
strophysique Spatiale)\, far-field measurements of the antenna beam were p
erformed and compared to electromagnetic simulations. These measurements d
emonstrate that the characterization of a copolarized beam can achieve the
accuracy required for future missions to study the cosmic microwave backg
round (CMB)\, with uncertainties on the order of 1 dB at -60 dB beam level
s and background noise below -80 dB\, confirming LiteBIRD's target sensiti
vity to primordial B-modes. The thesis then presents a detailed study of a
tmospheric emission at the Teide Observatory using data from the QUIJOTE M
FI and MFI2 instruments. Median profiles of atmospheric pressure\, tempera
ture\, and water vapor\, as well as the statistical properties of the atmo
sphere\, were established for the period 2012–2018. The stability of atm
ospheric conditions on hourly timescales was verified. Analysis of angular
structure functions and power spectra shows that atmospheric fluctuations
are generally consistent with Kolmogorov turbulence\, with an external sc
ale on the order of 500 m. Finally\, atmospheric opacity measurements were
performed using QUIJOTE skydip data and converted into PWV estimates usin
g AM and ATM radiative transfer models. These estimates were then compared
to in-situ PWV measurements. Although both models reproduced the general
trends\, systematic shifts\, particularly at low frequencies\, were identi
fied\, highlighting the need for further refinement for high-precision cal
ibration. Overall\, this thesis provides an important analysis of instrume
ntal and atmospheric systematics relevant to current and next-generation C
MB experiments.\n\nFollowing the defence\, you are also invited to a buffe
t in the IAS lobby.\n\nLooking forward to seeing you there\,\n
